This is Muscat . . .This is Muscat on rain . . .Any Questions?

This is what happens in Muscat when it rains! Despite the fact that people keep telling us that it doesn't rain in this country, it has rained at least 4 times, since we have been here. Each time, the city looks like this. People in Oman have no concept of how to drive when it rains. Back at home, there are ice days, when the schools close because people don't know how to drive when the roads ice over. Here, they have rain days. All the schools closed yesterday because of the rain. It is such a strange concept to me!

Things you need to know about rain in Oman:

    1) If you parked your car in a Wadi (i.e. a dry river bed) and it starts to rain, move your car!

    2) If, following some rain, the water in a wadi crosses OVER the road in front of you, rather than under it, turn around!

    3) If it is raining at all, go home so that you can start mopping up the water, because your house inevitably suffers from one or more (or all) of the following: balconies and windowsills that slope towards the house, rather than away from it; floors, balconies and rooftops that slope away from the drains, rather than towards them; doors and windows that have large gaps between them and the house; and bathroom drains on the ground floor that provide a convenient way for storm water to rise into your house.

Wow, and I thought people couldn't drive in the rain in L.A.! I just keep trying to figure out how they jumped over the guardrail and left it standing.
